NCD Synergies combines public sector accompaniment with clinical innovation to prioritize patients living with NCDs and injuries in settings of extreme poverty. In one of the most exciting components of this effort, NCD Synergies has formalized partnerships in a number of countries, providing technical assistance, staff support, and collaborating with trusted partners on the ground to make NCD planning priorities achievable.

Ethiopia

Ethiopia »

The NCD Division in the Ethiopia Federal Ministry of Health has spearheaded strategic activities for noncommunicable diseases and injuries in Ethiopia. NCD Synergies has been working with the FMOH since 2015 on operational planning for the expansion of decentralized and integrated NCD services targeted at controlling diseases affecting the poorest populations, including rheumatic heart disease. In September 2016, Ethiopia launched a National NCDI Poverty Commission focused on priority-setting for NCDs in settings of poverty.

Kenya

Kenya »

The NCD Division of the Kenya Ministry of Health has partnered with NCD Synergies with the aim of strengthening national NCD planning, monitoring and evaluation frameworks, and supporting a strategy to implement NCD and injury services at the county level. This has included technical collaborations since 2015 around equity-based target-setting and metrics for NCDs and injuries in settings of poverty. In December 2016, Kenya launched a National NCDI Poverty Commission to further these efforts.

Liberia

Liberia »

Following 14 years of civil war and the recent Ebola crisis, the Liberia Ministry of Health and Social Welfare is committed to putting the country on the path to rebuilding a devastated health system. The Partners In Health Liberia team, NCD Synergies, and Harvard Medical School are partnering with the NCD Division on multi-year planning and assessment goals to expand NCD and injury treatment to serve the poorest and hardest to reach in Liberia through technical assistance, service scale-up, and the Liberia NCDI Poverty Commission.

Rwanda

Rwanda »

Health leaders in Rwanda are global champions for extending Rwanda’s overall health system successes to the realm of NCDs and injuries. The NCD Division of the Rwandan Ministry of Health has successfully implemented several national programs spanning screening, referral and treatment. Since 2013, NCD Synergies has collaborated with and learned from the MOH, Rwanda Biomedical Centre, and PIH's sister site in Rwanda - Inshuti Mu Buzima - on efforts to scale up of service delivery, monitoring, and research efforts for severe, chronic NCDs.

Tanzania

Tanzania »

The Tanzania Ministry of Health and Social Welfare has been partnering with NCD Synergies since 2015 on technical assistance efforts focused on national planning, operationalization, and monitoring efforts for NCDs and injuries. These efforts, continued through the Tanzania NCDI Poverty Committee, will improve Tanzania’s capacity to monitor equitable access to care and the NCD and injury disease burden specific to Tanzania’s poorest populations.

About NCD Synergies

NCD Synergies is a project of Partners In Health that collaborates with health planners, researchers, and implementers to collect, develop, and share the information and tools needed to prevent and treat noncommunicable diseases and injuries in settings of extreme poverty. NCD Synergies is a community of support for those on the leading edge of expanding care for NCDs and injuries in low and middle-income countries with a focus on poor, vulnerable, and remote populations.
